Wednesday the United Launch Alliance (ULA) successfully launched the 9th Block IIF Global Positioning System navigation satellite from Cape Canaveral.

This is the 9th of 12 satellites intended to replenish and modernize the US Air Force’s Global Positioning System.

The satellite reached a planned Medium Earth Orbit, from there it will give navigation data for military and civilian users of the GPS system which was developed in the 1970s and 1980s.

With a weight of 1,630 kilograms (3,590 lb), the new satellites are slightly lighter than their predecessors, because they no longer have the apogee motor. Now they rely on the more powerful Atlas V and Delta IV rockets to deliver them directly into their operational orbits.

Three more launches are planned to complete the network, the next scheduled launches are in June, September and next January.
